Police on the West Coast of Demerara are trying to ascertain the whereabouts of a shotgun that is missing from the Parika Police Station.
The weapon, a 20-guage shotgun was lodged at the station for safekeeping by its owner, sometime last year.
However, it was discovered missing when he went to uplift it a few weeks ago.
Kaieteur News understands that the owner of the weapon would usually lodge it at the station for weeks at a time and would return to uplift it whenever necessary.
A senior police official on the West Coast of Demerara has confirmed that an internal investigation has been launched.
“We are investigating; we haven’t traced it. There are records of it being lodged,” the source told this newspaper.
He explained that there were some discrepancies uncovered in the various handing over processes that were checked, and there is evidence of some negligence on the part of the supervisors at the Parika police station.
“There appears to be some criminal negligence, but our investigations have not pointed us to any particular person,” said the source without elaborating.
