Guatemala goalkeeper Ricardo Perez goes airborne to ensure the Golden Jaguars do not penetrate his goal during the friendly international football match at the National Stadium last night.
the opening period and succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Guatemala in their friendly fixture which was played last evening, at the National Stadium, Providence.
Mynor Lopez opened the account for Guatemala after a scuffle between the Jags and Guatemalans in front the six yards box when Guyana’s opening keeper, Ronson Williams made the biggest mistake of stepping out of the box in attempting to take possession of the ball. Lopez then advance to the ball which was kicked towards the right upright by his team mate and tipped it into the goal in the 32nd minute.
Ricky Shakes, one of the players who scored in the Trinidad and Tobago (Soca Warriors) match last November, created numerous lucrative passes and goal opportunities which were unsuccessful. Shawn Beveney along with Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson lapsed on field during the match which cost the team tremendously.
After securing their first goal, the Guatemalans played in full defensive mood which stopped all goal chances by the Jags, who seemed to not fight their prey as they usually would.
The visitor led 1-0 at the conclusion of the first half. In the second period, the Jags who appeared to be boosted for a few minutes had Walter Moore, creating one of the best passes that would have been the equalizer for the team but unfortunately, Beveney misread the pass from Moore.
Konata Mannnigs also shaped another opportunity but his powerful left foot shot went beyond the goal. Moore was red carded for violent conduct after he hit an opposing player who had marked him hard for most of his stay.
With the visitors continuing their defensive play, the final goal was scored in
a similar manner as the first, but easier. This time is was Richard Reynolds who substituted for Williams that stepped out to grab the ball after Jake Newton missed his attempt to defend which allowed Guillermo Ramirez to run onto goal and hit a shot past the advancing Golden Jaguars goalkeeper who tried desperately to narrow the angle in the 93rd minute.
