Megnauth Premraj, 36, called ‘Smokey’, a deportee who had an arrest warrant issued for him on a charge of attempt murder, was on Monday sentenced to a total of 25 years in jail, after he pleaded guilty to robbing a Berbice television station among other places.
Premraj was accused of robbing the Little Rock Television Station and a minibus driver of over $500,000 in cash, jewelry and other items.
The Smythfield, New Amsterdam resident appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to five counts of robbery under arms. He was not required to plead since the charges were indictable. But he begged the court for a plea bargain for the charges to be disposed summarily.
All the robberies are alleged to have been committed on Friday, February 3rd.
He was accused of while being in company with others and armed with guns, robbing Pearl Dindyal, a Director of the Little Rock Television (LRTV) station of $200,000. He is also accused of robbing two employees of the LRTV. The two employees, Vishal Dindyal, a supervisor of Cumberland, East Canje Berbice and Khemraj Lalbeharry, a driver of Canefield, East Canje, Berbice, were also attacked and robbed. Premraj, who was accompanied by two bandits, took away a total of $335,000 in cash, jewelry and cell phones.
He was also accused of robbing Chetram Sirkissoon of one minibus, BMM 959 valued $2M, property of Inderjeet Deosarran at Susannah (No19) Village, East Coast Berbice. A passenger,
Thakoordial Roshahair was also robbed of $14,000.
One of the bandits then drove the minibus to a desolate area aback of Palmyra where it was later found abandoned.
Prosecutor Inspector, Donna Grant-Fraser, asked the court that the full penalty be meted to Premraj who is a known character to police. She stated that weapons were used and also cited the prevalence of the crime.
He was then sentenced to five years for each of the offences. Premraj had begged the court for leniency asking the Magistrate to have the sentences run concurrently. The Magistrate concurred and in the interim advised the thief to seek counseling.
Another known character, Mark Lee Young called “Junior”, 36, of Lot B4 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, has also been charged with the No19 Village robberies.
