– boat, engines recovered by police authorities
Quick actions by fellow fishermen and Surinamese authorities have led to the recovery of six boat engines and a stolen boat.
Six suspects have been detained in Suriname where police ranks are at present conducting their investigations.
Reports are that the boat was seized in Paramaribo sometime on Monday and a number of boat owners whose engines were stolen are also in Suriname.
It is believed that the suspects were the same persons who attacked fishermen on five boats Saturday and hijacked one vessel, escaping with money, seines, engines and a large supply of gasoline.
The attacked fishermen were later rescued by their colleagues and transported to Suriname where they were assisting in investigations.
A wife of one of the boat captains told Kaieteur News that her husband left with his crew on Friday to conduct fishing activities but sometime around midnight on Saturday they were robbed by pirates.
She said that her husband and his crew were not physically harmed by the sea bandits.
“They’re in Suriname still and coming home soon. Them take away the engine, gas, seines and whatever little money was on board with my husband them but my husband call me on the phone on Monday and say how police find a boat with the engines and some seine.”
Two of the hijacked boats belong to Nacho Manohar from Number 43 Village, Berbice while another is owned by Mark Jainarine of Number 78 Village. Another of the fishing boats is owned by D. Persaud of Number 54 Village.
