Police in Berbice have confiscated a quantity of iron which was allegedly
stolen from the Skeldon sugar factory compound yesterday. The metal (steel beams) was discovered in a truck which was leaving the factory compound.Estate officials were tightlipped on the matter when this newspaper made queries, but according to a source the relative of a senior manager has been fingered in the removal of the metal.
According to reports, a security guard at the facility observed the metal, in the truck as it was being driven out of the compound and he immediately informed his superiors who subsequently called in the police. The metal was offloaded in the police station compound while the green truck which was outfitted with mechanism to lift and pick up heavy objects, was released shortly after 13:00 hrs. Investigations are ongoing.
During an interview in December last year with this newspaper, several workers had claimed that “a new employee was caught by the factory manager, Mr. Goberdhan, carting off large amounts of brass from the old estate factory.” The man managed to run away but was apprehended a month later. He was subsequently dismissed but employees believe that the main perpetrators of the act are still on the job. The government of Guyana has suspended the lucrative scrap metal trade following several incidents of vandalism of state and private property.
