While many rice farmers from Golden Fleece, Essequibo Coast, are in the process of harvesting rice for
the first crop, a number of them especially those residing on the northern section have been hard hit from floods.
Farmers from the coast are hoping for a $4,000 for a bag of paddy.
But according to rice farmer, Parsram Balram, he has lost his entire 20 acres of rice at his Manawari, Dredge Creek, Somerset farm.
The damaged paddy was mainly due to a poor drainage system.
Balram, who has no plans of harvesting this time around, said the water has completely submerged his plot, destroying his field in the process.
The water had no way of leaving due to the problem of poor drainage, an irate Balram told this newspaper.
The rice farmer is now contemplating his options as he has monthly financial commitments, especially in the areas of paying his monthly rental for his land and the purchasing of seed paddy and fertilizers.
Karin Indal, another affected rice farmer, said he has since lost his10 acres of bearing rice, as a result of flooding.
His farm has been underwater for three weeks now and he too is facing difficulties in finding a way to drain the water out.
He claimed that the Region Two Administration had promised to dig a trench in order to prevent excessive water flowing over unto the farmlands but to date that promise has not been fulfilled.
Indal now has to find monies to purchase another twenty-five bags of seed paddies and fertilizers, to prepare his land.
Golden Fleece rice farmer, Parsram Balram, said he lost his 20 acres of rice because of poor drainage in that Region Two area.
Efforts made to receive assistance at the Guyana Rice Development Board, Balram said, proved futile. He is also appealing for both the relevant bodies and the Opposition parties to lobby in the interest of the farmers who have encountered losses and for the immediate addressing of the serious issues of flooding and assistance.
