$200,000 worth of cricket gear and personal development items when the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) hosted the 5th Annual Basil Butcher Cricket Development Trust Fund (BBCDTF) presentation.
The event took place at the Club’s Area ‘H’ Ground Office and the players rewarded were Brandon Prashad, Veramootoo Senwasane and Viendra Gooniah of the RHTY≻ Enoch Carmichael of the Tucber Park Cricket Club.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster in remarks announced that the Club and the former West Indies batting master ever since 2008 has been hosting the Cricket Development Trust Fund to assist young players from the host Club and others in Berbice.
Foster disclosed that since the start of the Fund in 2008, a total of 28 youngsters have received a total of $1M worth of cricket gear and education materials.
Among those who were assisted were national junior players Loyydel Lewis, Shawn Pereira, Linden Austin, Arif Chan and West Indies female player Shemaine Campbelle. He called on the 2012 awardees to utilize the assistance given to them from Mr. Butcher and the Club in a positive way.
Board and Club President Keith Foster, who is the eldest son of Butcher, raised him for remembering his roots and assisting youths to achieve their dreams.
Butcher, he stated is giving back to the development of the game which made him famous.
Foster issued a challenge to former cricketing greats from the Ancient County to follow Butcher’s footsteps and to play a role in the historic developments currently taking place in Berbice.
Butcher, stated his delight in assisting young players who he wants to see fulfill their dreams just like he did. Playing for the West Indies Butcher stated, was his greatest achievement and to share dressing room with legends like Sir Frank Worrel, Everton Weeks, Rohan Kanhai, Conrad Hunte, Wes Hall and Lance Gibbs are memories that would remain for life.
He challenged the youths to remain focus at all times and to always listen to the words of advice given by coaches and those who have played the game at a high level. He committed himself to continuing sponsorship of the Trust Fund while complimenting the RHTY&SC for the work it is doing.
Butcher described the club as being a dynamic and progressive organisation and called on other clubs and organisations to emulate the work they have been doing.
