Versatile left-sided player Christopher Bourne was the ‘Golden Jaguar’ player to score over the
weekend, aiding his club Metropolitan Police to a 4-1 victory over Horsham on Sunday.
Metropolitan Police is a Semi Professional club that plays in the Isthmian League. This league, which was founded in 1905, consists of 66 teams in three divisions; the Premier Division above its two feeder divisions, Division One North and Division One South.
Together with the Southern League and the Northern Premier League, it forms the seventh and eighth levels of the English football league system.
Bourne who has 16 International caps, scoring two goals for the ‘Golden Jaguars’ since he made his debut for the national side against Cuba in 2008, came on as a second half substitute to and scored his team’s third goal in the route.
Metropolitan Police are currently 9th place in the 22 team Ryam Isthman League table. Defender Leon Cort’s side Charlton Athletic continued to hold the top spot of the League-One table by six points over Sheffield United, as they remained unbeaten in two games they played in past week.
In the mid-week fixture they drew 1-1 with relegation threatened Rochdale in which Cort came on as an 80th minute substitute. While on Saturday in front of what the British media described as the biggest post-war attendance of over 25,000 for a third tier game – they triumphed 2-0 over Stevenage in which Cort was an unused substitute.
League-One Division is the third tier of the English Football pyramid behind the Championship and Premier League. This means Cort is the Jaguar playing in the highest division of football in the world currently.
In his last game before joining up for the national side for an international friendly against Guatemala, regular right-back Jake Newton played the full 90 minutes as his English Conference South Division team Havant & Waterlooville colloquially known as the “Hawks”, lost 3-1 to Welling United last Tuesday.
That was Hawks’ second consecutive 3-1 defeat following a similar result against fourth place Coventry City when we last reported. However in Newton’s absence on Sunday, his team recovered to defeat Dorchester town 6-3 to up one position into 16th place in the Blue Square South league table.
Last week’s star of the week, Right-winger Ricky Shakes was fully active as his Conference national team Ebbsfleet United also suffered two defeats in the past week. League leader Fleetwood Town hammered them 6-2 last Tuesday, before also losing 2-1 to fourth placed South Port.
Those defeats pushed Ebbsfleet one place down down the points table to 15th place in the 23 team league.
Striker Carl Cort is currently in Asia deciphering offers from clubs in China and Thailand who are soliciting the services of the 34-year-old forward who has over 15 years experience of playing in the top three tiers of English football.
Speaking on Cort’s behalf was Golden Jaguars Marketing Manager Faizal Khan who is also a licensed FIFA Scout and he highlighted that high profile players such a former Chelsea and France striker Nicolas Anelka has recently gone to play in Asian leagues.
Players earn up to USD $10,000 a season and hopefully he will be the first of many Guyanese football players to get a chance to play in those continental leagues.
Over in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Pro League (TTPL) basically the entire Guyanese contingent was on show for their clubs except striker Vurlon Mills as their respective clubs attained positive results.
Neal and Massy Caledonia AIA contingent of left back Walter Moore, goalkeeper Ronson Williams, defender Colin Nelson and midfielder Trayon Bobb started as their side won an exciting dual 3-2 over last placed Defense Force.
None of the quartet scored – but Caledonia AIA currently sit third place in the six team league.
In the other game between league leaders T&T Tec and fifth place North East Stars (NES), the Guyanese duo of defender Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard and midfielder Kayode McKinnon started in the fixture that ended 1-1.
Mills who plays for T&T Tec did not start although as he recently returned to fitness following a spell in which he was out for two months due to a knee injury.
