‘Magic’ injured in Cardiff

Local Olympic boxing hopeful ‘Magic’ Imran Khan has been advised to rest for two days after

sustaining an injury to his right ankle in Cardiff on Sunday. Khan, Guyana’s lone representative at the highly acclaimed Road To London Training Camp in Wales said that he sustained the injury while sparring and was advised to take a two day rest.
“I was going backwards when I got the injury and although I could have continued the trainers said that I should rest the foot,” Khan said in a telephone interview. Khan, who departed Guyana on February 17 for the three-week training camp said that he will return to training today.
The 19-year-old 2011 Junior Sportsman of the Year informed that boxers train three times a day and are constantly being observed by trainers. He added that despite the intensity he is enjoying the camp.
“There are fighters from all over the world here. So I am getting to see different styles. I have sparred with many boxers and I am also exposed to different kinds of training,” Khan said.
The Road to London Training Camp is being conducted by 14 of the world’s best trainers, including Head Coach and Welsh legend Colin Jones, and organized by AIBA.
Sixty Two boxers from around the world are participating in the Camp. Khan, an ALBA Games bronze medalist assured that he has now beaten the “cold weather” which caused much concern when he first arrived. ”Yes the place is cold but I am much better now that when I first came. I can’t complain. I have to make the best of this opportunity for myself and country,” he pointed out.
Meanwhile, in an invited comment president of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association Steve Ninvalle said the association was in constant contact with Khan. According to Ninvalle, should Khan triumph at the Olympic Qualifier to be held in Rio de Janeiro in May, he will be automatically invited to the second Road to London camp from July 5-24. Khan is expected back home on March 11.
