A 20-year-old carpenter is now critical and is nursing head injuries in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the
Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), after he was reportedly hit by a speeding car.
The accident is believed to have occurred sometime after 01:00 hrs Sunday.
Badly injured is Vangaskar Ramcharitar of Lot 664 Good Hope, East Coast Demerara.
The driver reported the accident yesterday and told Police that she could not remember what had happened.
The police did not administer a breathalyzer test at the time of the accident and there are concerns as to why that was not done.
The driver was placed on station bail. This was after the police who were conducting the investigation were reportedly instructed to do so by a superior officer.
Reports are that it was after the 20-year-old left a restaurant where he was drinking with some friends that the incident occurred.
It is alleged that Ramcharitar left the restaurant and was about to cross the road when the car struck him down.
The injured man was rushed to the GPHC by the Police, while the driver was taken into police custody.
Family members claimed that the driver told police officers that another vehicle hit the man and “pelt him into her car” and within a few seconds she alleged that the place was dark and she did not see the victim.
Ramcharitar’s mother, Anita John, said that she was in Bel Air, Georgetown at one of her relatives when she got a call from her daughter, Amrita, saying that her son was involved in an accident and was taken to the GPHC.
“I immediately went there; I went at the Accident and Emergency Unit and they told me that no accident victim was brought there. I left and went back then they told me that there is an unidentified person in the ICU,” the mother lamented.
She said that she and another relative instantly went to the ICU where she found her son lying on a bed with “a machine connected to his body.”
As tears rolled down her cheeks she said “I touched his feet but there was no response and after I start crying the nurses asked me to leave,” John recalled.
Ramcharitar’s uncle, Andrew, said that he is not fully aware of the incident, but based on what he heard his nephew was struck down by a car and sustained a broken leg and hand along with head injuries.
He is listed as “critical” by doctors.
