-Meusa snaps endemic drought
Jody-Ann Blake proved that she may still be a threat despite her inconsistency since
returning to competitive table tennis last year when she prolonged the wait for Natalie Cummings to win any major title with her commanding straight-set win on Sunday.
Blake, who demolished Cummings on her return to competitive table tennis at the Independence tournament last year, showed similar devastating form, crushing the same opponent over straight sets in the Women Singles final of the National Sports Commission (NSC)/Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Mashramani competition.
Blake thrashed Cummings 11-6, 12-10 and 13-11 after the battle intensified as sets elapsed in the title contest. It was the second consecutive lost for Cummings in a major title contest in less than three months after Trenace Lowe had made light work of the dedicated Cummings in the final of the National Championships.
Blake, who is a 2003 Caribbean Junior Champion and National Junior Sportswoman of the Year, completely outplayed Cummings; it proved that Blake may still have the ‘game’ that gave her those accolades several years ago. She was not the only one to spring a surprise.
Paul Meusa, who lost to junior counter-part Nigel Bryan in the National Championships final last year, silenced his critics with an emphatic 11-5, 11-7 and 11-5 win against Edinho Lewis in the Men’s Singles final. Meusa was definitely into the contest as he successfully used the supporters of his opponent, who was more favored to win, to his advantage.
Meusa, who usually gets distracted easily, stuck to the game plan after losing the first set, giving himself enough motivation with his shift in mental fortitude. The prevalence of the two stalwarts in the sport winning titles was impressive to watch at the National Gymnasium.
In other facts, Nigel ‘Poster Boy’ Bryan defeated Samuel Fraser 11-8, 11-7 and 11-7 while joint third place was given to Elishaba Johnson and David Duncan. The annual competition began last weekend and concluded on Sunday.
Director of Sports, Neil Kumar congratulated the GTTA for hosting what he called a “well-organised” tournament. Kumar lauded the exemplary discipline and dedication the young players displayed during the two weekends of intense competition.
Vice-President of the GTTA, Dr. Pradeep Balram, accepted Kumar’s kudos, adding that he was overwhelmed with the large number of participants in the tournament, which totaled 220 players from areas including Bartica and Berbice. (Edison Jefford)
