Under the theme “A book in every Guyanese Household”, the Georgetown Reading and Research Centre (GRRC) yesterday launched its first annual literacy week, with the aim of boosting reading levels among all age groups.
Rupert Hopkinson, Director of the GRRC, stated that this initiative commenced at Bookland, amidst a small academic community of 11 schools surrounding Woolford Avenue.
It is hoped that hundreds of students as well as adults will frequent Bookland during February 27 to March 3, since all of the books are being sold at “giveaway prices.”
Hopkinson explained that this sale is unique in comparison with the others during the past 14 years of the GRRC’s establishment.
The books will be sold at prices ranging from 60 percent to 90 percent off the regular prices.
“Reading is fundamental to national development and the GRRC will intensify its focus to get people to read more by continuing to provide an enabling environment,” Hopkinson assured.
Kaieteur News understands that during the GRRC’s Literacy Week 2012, every customer will benefit from a maximum of 10 free books with purchases of any amount.
“I hope that this gesture will give true meaning to the theme, as the more fortunate members of the public can purchase books and donate to individuals, schools and community libraries,” added the GRRC Director.
GRRC Literacy Week 2012 comes in the middle of another book sale, where the buyer gets eight (8) free books with purchases of $2,000 and more.
This other sale runs until March 28.
