Speeding driver killed in Maria’s Lodge crash
Michael Persaud, 20, of Johanna Cecilia, died early yesterday morning after his vehicle PHH 6595 slammed into a culvert at Maria’s Lodge, a few rods from where he resided with his parents. Persaud sustained severe injuries and succumbed.
According to reports, Persaud was heading home at around 01:00 hrs when he crashed. He was reportedly speeding along the roadway.
His grieving mother, Monica Persaud, said that she last saw the eldest of her three children shortly after 19:00 hours.
Mrs. Persaud explained that she was with Michael, who worked at Derrick Gobin’s as a sales boy, eating a piece of barbecue chicken, when she said that he received a call from some of his friends. She said his friends were waiting for him at the junction of the Johanna Cecilia Public Road.
“That was the last time I saw my son. He just had two bite of the barbecue and left.”
The woman said she understands that her son had left for Anna Regina. She said later in the evening, her son returned home and moments later he headed for Suddie, a neighbouring Village.
Mrs. Persaud said she learnt that her son was at a Chinese Restaurant, but before she would have learnt of her son’s death, she said that a group of boys came to her residence to inform her that her son had scratched their vehicle.
She said the boys made other statements but she was too afraid, so she did not respond. Later, Mrs. Persaud said she learnt of her son’s death.
Chetram Persaud, Michael’s father said he was at work when he received the sad news.
Mr. Persaud, who works as a security guard at Supenaam stelling said that he visited the Suddie Public Hospital and assisted in cleaning his dead son’s body.
Mr. Persaud said that he scoured the scene in attempt to recover the driver’s licence that would have been in the car. He and Michael were the only people who drove the vehicle. Mr. Persaud said he found a shirt and a pair of slippers in the trench. He could not say whether someone else was in the car with Michael at the time of the accident.

Police later visited the scene and towed away the mangled vehicle.
The family is preparing to cremate Michael Persaud’s remains sometime this week after a post mortem.
