Dear Editor,
I am compelled to respond to some of the statements made in the media regarding the transformation of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, which is now being managed by the a newly appointed Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment.
Editor, I have been involved in the mining sector for more than twenty years and I, among other miners, welcome this new dispensation which promises transformation of the GGMC and the mining sector as a whole.
For too long the GGMC and the mining sector have been neglected and left to be managed at the whims of the Commission without a vision to revolutionize mining. More or less, GGMC has grown accustomed to be negligent in their responsibilities and now efforts are being made to thwart the necessary changes to improve the performance of the Commission and integrity of its officers.
Further, miners welcome the proposed independent appointment of Mining Inspectors to monitor mining operations and to maintain the integrity of GGMC staff, particularly Field Officers.
New hope was breathed into the sector with the appointment of Minister Robert Persaud to take the lead and move mining forward.
I can tell you from a miner’s perspective, that there is much opposition by some of the staff of the GGMC to the intended changes, as it means they will have to improve efficiency and be transparent in their actions. Hence, their reluctance and outcry.
Equally shocking is the support the GGMC is receiving from the Guyana Public Service Union and the Opposition to oppose the changes that are intended to transform the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission to improve their efficiency and service to miners; all in the development of Guyana.
However, on my own behalf and that of thousands of miners who have been at the mercy of mismanagement and lethargic behaviour by the GGMC over the years, we now see a light of change and a semblance of order and innovation that is set to transform the mining sector.
Change is not always easy, but is necessary for survival in a competitive global environment that we all ply our trade and live.
I therefore urge the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment to stand firm as we the miners want to see and be the change that will contribute positively to transforming the mining sector and managing our natural resources.
