A man who used an ice pick to rob a customer in the bathroom of the Dread Shop restaurant was on Friday remanded to jail by Magistrate Allan Wilson on an armed robbery charge.
Twenty-two year old Trevor Merriman, of B Field Sophia, pleaded not guilty to the offence that accused him of on February 22 at Georgetown, while armed with an offensive weapon, robbing Satesh Mohabir of two cell phones, an ATM card and $3000 cash.
The police alleged that Mohabir was drinking with friends at the shop which is located on Cornhill Street, opposite the route 42 bus stop. They said that the man left his friends to use the urinal and Merriman allegedly followed him to the washroom where he reportedly walked up to Mohabir and placed the ice pick to the man’s waist and ordered that he hand over his valuables.
According to the investigating rank, the owner of the shop became aware of what was transpiring and tried to render his assistance. It was then learnt that two persons were involved in the alleged plot to rob the man.
As more persons intervened to offer their aid, the two men dashed out of the shop and ran in different directions. Merriman was however apprehended by public spirited citizens who gave chase after the alleged thief. The man was handed over to the police and a cell phone was reportedly found in the defendant’s possession. He was arrested and charged with offence.
The prosecution objected to bail. Merriman was ordered to return to court on March 14. Until then, he will remain in state custody.
