– computerised ones for introduction later this year
Pending the introduction of a computerised system for drivers’ licences later this year, authorities have introduced an interim one which will take up to two days for an application for renewal to be processed.
According to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), drivers will be issued a temporary permit valid for three days, while their renewals are being processed.
GRA explained that the new systems and procedures are being implemented in order to alleviate the frustration faced by members of the public and reduce the length of time spent waiting at the Licence Revenue Office.
“The number of drivers has increased significantly over the years and consequently the existing procedures can no longer be used without significant delays because of the sheer volume of transactions to be processed.”
It is expected that the computerised system drivers’ licences will be introduced in the third quarter of 2012.
“This will allow the GRA to process drivers’ licences quickly and issue drivers with a printed driver’s licence that will have security features making it difficult to forge.”
In the interim period before the implementation of the computerised new drivers’ licences, the GRA will be using a new system for processing “since we do not wish to relax our controls and lose revenue and/or create any loopholes for fraudulent transactions,” a statement from that state agency said.
“The GRA will now be renewing drivers’ licences within two days of receipt of the application. Persons would drop off their documents for renewal of the drivers’ licences and will be given a permit to drive for three days. They will be asked to return the next day in the afternoon or the following day in the morning depending on when the application is received.”
GRA has already computerised the Motor Vehicle Licences and Registration and Trade and Miscellaneous Licences processes and will shortly be issuing printed Motor Vehicle Registration certificates and Trade and Miscellaneous Licences.
