Dear Editor,
It is clear that Donald Ramotar is surrounded by confidantes, loyalists and soup drinkers from the era of Bharrat Jagdeo. In fact, there is no one who appears to have been a Donald Ramotar pick in Cabinet and his inner advisory circle. He is mobbed by Jagdeoites. That is a dangerous den for a President tasked with running a country to be caught in.
The recent rhetoric from President Ramotar ridiculously alleging the opposition rigged the election is exactly the kind of bitter and nasty nonsensicality the Jagdeoites would raise to savagely raise the ethnic temperature of this country.
The recent posturing, grandstanding and utterances has one motive and one motive only; to plunge this country into another election. It is all gearing the PPP to a snap election, which the PPP will lose and again, will fail to grab a majority.
This is where I believe Donald Ramotar is being used, abused, hoodwinked, conned, fooled and made a sacrificial lamb for what may be the dirtiest ploy of the Jagdeoites.
This is where I think the wool is being pulled over The Donald’s eyes. For the PPP will not just only lose the majority, it will suffer a loss of votes compared to 2011. My calculations and analysis indicate the PPP can lose anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 votes in a new election. The Jagdeoites surrounding Ramotar will blame him for the PPP’s dismal returns and its fall from political grace. They will insist upon having his head.
The PPP’s further fall in the election will be used to target Donald Ramotar. They will tell him that for the sake of the party he has to step down to stop the bleeding after prodding him to call an ill-timed and ill-advised election.
They will argue that the party needs new leadership for revival. Knowing Donald Ramotar, he will be inclined to step down for the sake of the party.
Then the Jagdeoites will put one of their own to take the presidency such as master mismanager Robert Persaud, of the Skeldon factory, Hope Canal and the destruction of the sugar industry fame.
Donald Ramotar would be sacrificed for the internal dictatorship of the PPP to continue. A new snap election will result in an internal coup in that menagerie of dictatorship the PPP has become forcing Donald Ramotar from power.
What I do know is that Donald Ramotar has to strike a new deal with the people of Guyana. Nation always trumps party.
Sometimes a man has to fight those wolves in wolf clothing within his own clan to get the support of the nation at large. Donald Ramotar has to think carefully about his political future and his loyalty to this country before he foolishly calls a snap poll and ends up politically hanging himself.
For if Ramotar ends up committing political suicide by calling an early snap election relying on the prodding of the misinformed and the arrogant surrounding him, he could plunge this country into a terrible period where the conniving, corrupt, incompetent and prideful are rewarded with power as he ends up with his nose pressed against the window pane looking in at the scene of devastation. Donald Ramotar will not last six months if he calls an early snap election and the expected results of anguish come in.
Donald Ramotar has a better chance of cleaning up the PPP’s act, removing square pegs in round holes, putting competent leadership in place, exiling the rats, thieves and the arrogant, finding new leadership untainted by the past and putting the PPP on a path of democracy and transparency. If he does that, the PPP will win the next election in 2016 by a landslide. If he doesn’t, he will not last six months after that election. It will be a scene reminiscent of Julius Caesar hanging onto the coat of Brutus as the drawn daggers of those he trusted disappear into his back.
