Relatives of Moonia Sanicharra have reported that the Ministry of Agriculture finally arrived yesterday to exterminate the Africanised bees that stung the 57-year-old woman to death last Thursday.
Kaieteur News understands that staffers from the Bees Control Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture up to Friday were yet to destroy the swarm and this stirred much discomfort among residents in the area.
One woman on Friday evening stated that the hive was located on a tree in the Abdulla backdam, and that many persons have to pass that tree in order to reach their farm lands.
“They know someone died when they read the papers. They should have been here already and burn them out or destroy them somehow. If people pass there and get sting up and somebody else died, then it would have been their fault because they need to do their jobs that they get paid to do,” complained a neighbour of the dead woman on Friday night.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture had stated that staff from the Bees Control Unit were instructed to visit the site to ensure that the bee threat was eliminated.
According to a statement from the Ministry, persons who are aware of areas where bees are known to exist are asked to contact the said unit so that action can be taken.
This newspaper further understands that a register is now established to record where hives exist and where elimination efforts have taken place.
Persons are asked to call the Ministry’s Hotline number at 227-5049 or the Bees Control Unit Hotline at 226-8714 for immediate response.
On Thursday, last, a swarm of Africanised bees attacked and killed Sanicharra at Abdullah Dam, Cane Grove, Mahaica.
Reports are that the woman was climbing a mango tree in the backdam when the bees attacked.
According to the dead woman’s daughter, Sanicharra was fully aware that the bees were present; but she reassured her family that they would do her no harm because she never troubled the hive. (Kristen Macklingam)
