Robin Persaud returned to winning when he finished in the top podium spot yesterday in the School Boys & Invitational 35-lap contest in One Hour 17 Minutes 34 seconds at the Inner Circuit of the National Park.
The occasion was the 21st R&R International Ltd. sponsored Mashramani 11 Race Cycle Meet. Persaud, a member of the Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club won the contest ahead of Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams who has been gradually on the improve, Raymond Newton, Orville Hinds also on the improve, Paul DeNobrega and the Differently Abled Walter Grant-Stuart who closed out the top six spots.
The prime prizes were shared between Raynauth Jeffrey (3), Hinds (2) with one apiece for Newton, DeNobrega and Grant-Stuart.
Persaud’s win yesterday sets the tone for what is anticipated to be an enthralling battle today on the West Demerara roadway in the 40-mile showdown which will also be sponsored by R&R International Ltd.
Persaud won last year’s road race and will fancy his chances of a repeat following yesterday’s performance.
DeNobrega continues to maintain high end performances having won the juvenile 10-lap race in 23 Minutes 27 Seconds, crossing the finish line in front of Jeffrey and Kurt La Rose.
Newton also did well on the day, apart from his third place finish in the open race, he won the veteran Under-50 5-lap event, clocking 11 Minutes 35 Seconds; defeating last year’s winner Kennard Lovell in the process, Thuran Harris copping 3rd.
The Over-50 5-lap showdown saw Linden’s Kirkwood Kellman (14mins 38secs) stopping his rivals, Lance Rose and Wilfred Thom following in that order.
Ruling the roost among the Over-60 (5-lap) competitors was the hard working Monty Parris, Harry Gill and Maurice Fagundes had to settle for the second and third place respectively.
It was girl power in the 12-14 3-lap tussle among the boys and girls; Naiomi Singh leaving her rivals behind winning in 8 Minutes 26 Seconds. Alfa Sonoram crossing the finish line ahead of Stephon Lovell to claim the runner-up spot.
In the BMX races, Jamal Arthur ruled the roost in the 6-9 and 9-12 categories. He pedaled over the line ahead of Parun Ghabarran and Denzil Huntley in the 6-9 event, while Philbert Walters and Huntley completed the top three positions in the 9-12 race.
Adrian Sharma, Yusuf Latiff and Khemraj Sanichar occupied the top spots in the BMX 12-14 encounter while the open event saw Makel Diaz topping the field ahead of Cleveland King and Ricardo Sharma.
Today’s 40-miler on the West Demerara will pedal off from the Demerara Harbour Bridge at 09:00hrs proceed to Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to the starting line for the finish.
