DEAR EDITOR,
Surely, this must be a first! A country’s army holding a (public) beauty pageant?! Just when I think we cannot get more absurd as a people, I’m proven wrong.
Here is a bunch of women holding public office, setting aside their responsibilities to “advertise their ware.” And for what? A trophy and some pittance of a prize jackpot?
Apparently, I am supposed to see past the shirking of their official duties and assuage my conscience that they are “bringing brains, body and beauty” to bear in the competition. Ridiculous!
I would think the WAC can come up with more creative and meaningful ways to celebrate such a momentous milestone in the Army’s history and women’s role in shaping that history. What baffles me about the WAC’s decision to host a beauty pageant is not that it demeans women and trivializes the Women’s Army Corp’s significant work, but that it comes at a time when women in other countries’ armies are fighting for the right to be in active combat.
With the Army’s image so tarnished and the recent elevation of one of the WAC’s ranks to full colonel (a major achievement), I would urge to WAC to focus its energies on more important matters.
