Any learned person will tell you that you can repair a defective biology but a damaged psychology is not easy to fix. In cultural studies worldwide, the debate rages on as to whether colonial subjects have not had their psychology permanently damaged by the psychic ravishes of European domination.
For many Third World experts including our own V.S. Naipaul, the post-colonial subject is a study in failure because colonialism destroyed our creativity.
In Guyana, what Cheddi and Janet Jagan have done to subsequent PPP generations makes the PPP not only a flawed organization but the Jagan legacy has destroyed the psychic integrity of the PPP’s collective leadership.
There is no way any PPP policy-maker would accept that they have been rejected at the 2011 elections. My analysis is that both the AFC and APNU were weak in major areas of their campaigning and that cost them substantial votes.
I cannot speak much for APNU but I could for the AFC. Vast areas of the AFC’s work were neglected because of factors that should not detain us here. One example should suffice. The AFC failed to do meaningful chores in West Coast Demerara. APNU in Georgetown was helped by the revelations of the libel case brought by President Jagdeo but in actual fact APNU didn’t spend much energy in Georgetown.
A frightening 130,000 registered persons did not vote. A sizeable handful of them were APNU people.
AFC and APNU did not have polling agents in many PPP districts. I know that for sure in Cane Grove where some mischief took place. This mischief and the weaknesses of the AFC and APNU cost both opposition parties. If APNU and AFC had performed beyond the minimum, their percentage points would have been much higher. These factors the PPP will not acknowledge.
What the PPP will never concede is that the phenomenal sums it spent and the resource and media advantage it had should have brought it a sixty percent majority.
If with those prodigious advantages the PPP scored below fifty percent on November 28, 2011, then only fools who hide their heads in the sand will see a PPP majority in a snap poll. It will not happen. But the PPP believes it will happen because the collective leadership of the PPP can only think in terms of the inherent greatness of the PPP.
That is what Cheddi and Janet Jagan bequeathed to them. Ask any leader of the PPP whether Sam Hinds was a factor in their poor showing and they will tell you no.
After 19 years as Prime Minister and with a total lack of charisma and dynamism, the party put him back as the PM candidate in front of many young, alternatives who would have fared better. And the PPP will call a snap poll and put him again. That is how a damaged psychology works.
Never for a moment did the PPP think that Roger Luncheon was a liability. Never for a moment, did it think that this was a guy that had his time and that a more impressive personality needed to replace him. And the party will go into another election with the assertion that he will continue to be the HPS if it wins.
All the campaign managers in Freedom House looked to Bharrat Jagdeo to win the election for them. In all the big events, Jagdeo overshadowed Ramotar. It was conclusive to the entire nation that the PPP’s point man in the campaign was Bharrat Jagdeo. The psychology of the collective leadership at Freedom House was too flawed to see that the biggest liability on voting day was Bharrat Jagdeo. He was unpopular and was associated with the incredible rise of corruption in the PPP Government.
Finally, the chauvinistic character that the Jagans molded for subsequent PPP generations made them see the PPP as invincible. There was no need to behave as good guys because the PPP was unbeatable. Nothing humane, democratic or encouraging was done before November 28 to impress the electorate that “after all we are good guys, look what we have done.”
The PPP leaders are incapable of attempting to placate the population because in their psychology they are the little gods that Cheddi Jagan gave Guyana and the Guyanese people will always vote for them.
Yes they will call a snap poll and would not bother what people think of what they did to UG just after November 28, of how people think of the Edghills, Lumumbas, Rohees, Mc Coys and Teixeiras, that they are happy to thrust upon the Guyanese people. Yes they will call another election and receive another defeat.
