Beverage giants, Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL), continues to place great faith in
the administrators of the local Chess Federation when it acquiesced to another sponsorship deal to offset the expenses for the Republic Anniversary Open Chess Tournament which gets underway tomorrow morning at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.
Marketing Assistant of the beverage giants, Almira Kassim visited the tournament venue Wednesday morning and sealed the deal when she handed over the sponsorship cheque to, Vice President and tournament organizer, Irshad Mohamad.
“Topco is proud to be associated with chess and we have noted its growth and development over the years,” the company representative observed. She further commended the hard working executives for the part they played in the developmental process while issuing congratulatory sentiments for their acquisition of the 2011 National Sports Award of ‘Most Improved Association.’
The tournament is open to all senior and junior chess players and will be played over eight rounds under the Swiss System where each player will be allotted 90 minutes per game. The first four rounds would be played this weekend while the remaining four would be contested next weekend. Players are also advised to walk with a pen to record their moves.
The registration fee is $300 for seniors while junior members that are members of the GCF pay $200. Participating non members are required to par a slightly increased registration fee. Trophies and cash prizes are at stake.
