-trials set for March 4 with grand take away lunch as fund raiser
The technical committee of the Athletic Association of Guyana along with several coaches from various clubs across Guyana, assembled Wednesday (22 February) afternoon at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, Kingston to set the qualifying timings for 2012 CARIFTA Games which will be hosted in Hamilton, Bermuda from 6th-9th of April at the National Stadium.
After hours of deliberating several years of CARIFTA third place timings dated back from 2001, a realistic qualifying timing was set by the technical committee and coaches for the vying CARIFTTA athletes to meet.
2011 Guyana CARIFTA team had a final total of four athletes; the athletes which came from different parts of Guyana represented their country in the both middle distance and sprint events.
Melissa Byass of Berbice, had the privilege of running the girls’ 400 meter dash under 17 (58.97 seconds), Nathaniel Giddings of Upper Demerara Club ran the boys under 20, 1500m (4:38.83 seconds) and 5000m (17:33.46 seconds), Jevina Straker of Georgetown, ran the girls 800m U20 (2:21.02 seconds) and the 1500m U20 girls (4:55.49 seconds), Stephan James whose also from Georgetown ran the 200m (22.58 seconds) boys under 20 and the 400 boys (48.46 seconds).
The AAG CARIFTA trials is set for March 4 at the Police Sports Club ground, a grand take away lunch will be held in aid of raising funds for the team which will be traveling to Bermuda to represent Guyana.
