Police are questioning more suspects in connection with the bizarre murder of Sophia
mechanic Marlon Welcome.
Kaieteur News understands that at least one person was detained on Monday after detectives returned to Welcome’s home to search for more clues about his death.
A source said that investigators are processing the fingerprints of some suspects and trying to ascertain whether they match other prints retrieved from louvre panes that the killer(s) allegedly removed from a kitchen window to gain entry.
The investigators revisited the scene after a post mortem revealed that the 33-year-old mechanic had been shot at the back of the head at close range. Investigators believe the killer used a .38 handgun, but are still to conduct ballistic tests on the warhead that was retrieved during the post mortem.
Detectives had initially believed that Welcome was struck with a blunt instrument.
A source said that because they were initially unaware that Welcome had been shot, investigators did not check the hands or clothing of those questioned for traces of gunpowder.
It is now unlikely that the forensic experts would be able to retrieve this evidence.
Acting on information that Welcome’s killers entered the house via a kitchen window, investigators checked the kitchen area and reportedly found traces of mud in the sink. A source also said that a pipe outside the house was broken, and that this seemed to indicate that the assassin stood on it while clambering through the window.
So far, though, police are reportedly still looking for a motive.
Welcome’s niece told Kaieteur News that about $20,000 was left untouched in her uncle’s room.
A police official observed that if the killer indeed entered Welcome’s house via a window, he took a great risk and was apparently very determined to execute Welcome.
“He would have been going through the window head-first and he would have been helpless if somebody in the house had attacked him,” the source said.
According to the source, the mortally wounded Welcome was found lying in a passageway near his bedroom door. A pillow was near the victim. Police had suspected that the gunman had used the pillow to muffle the sound of the gunshot. However, they found no bullet holes or blood on the pillow.
Welcome’s niece, Enkeni Isaacs, was the only other occupant of the Lot 192 ‘A’ Field, Sophia residence when the killing occurred.
Ms. Isaacs has told Kaieteur News that she last spoke with him at around 21:00 hours lastThursday. She was reportedly awakened at around 01:30 hrs last Friday by two ‘banging’ sounds. She then heard her uncle groaning.
Ms. Isaacs said she was about to check on him when she realized that she was clad only in her underwear, and not in the nude as was reported in Tuesday’s edition.
She put on some clothes and ran outside in the living room shouting for ‘thief’. Isaacs said when she ran into the living room she saw that the back door was open.
“I see like somebody running through the back door so I run straight outside and call out for my neighbours.”
Isaacs said when she ran to the back door she stumbled over her uncle who was lying on the floor. He was bleeding from what appeared to be a wound to the temple.
Neighbours took Welcome to the Woodlands Hospital where he succumbed.
The niece was detained for three days before being released.
