A taxi driver, who attempted to hang himself after being locked up for allegedly assaulting his wife was yesterday granted bail to the tune of $25,000 when he appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Extremely emotional, Osafo Edgill faced the court with tearful eyes to answer two charges that stated that on February 21 at stall 23 in the North Ruimveldt Mall, he assaulted Fiona Shepherd. On that same date, Edghill at the North Ruimveldt Police Outpost attempted to commit suicide while in custody.
The 37-year-old father, of 2994 North Ruimveldt , Georgetown, could not hold back his tears as his lawyer Adrian Thompson explained that his client was going through domestic woes that were more than he could bear.
The lawyer asked that his client be granted bail before revealing that Edghill had a string of domestic issues that were weighing heavily on his mind. The lawyer recommended that Edghill be counseled since his current position was severely affecting him. He also believed that if the defendant was further imprisoned, there was no telling what he would do.
The prosecution did not object to bail but requested that Edghill get the professional help required. Prosecutor Lionel Harvey also requested that a progress report be presented to the court in order to monitor the developments of the defendant.
The court heard that the man and his wife were going through a tough time and because of their ongoing issues, Edghill attempted to kill himself at the police station. The man was however prevented from doing so and then charged with the offence.
The defendant will return to court on March 7.
