Carlton ‘Corn Man’ Stephenson Marathon Run which is scheduled for February 22 from 3am at the Soesdyke Junction, Timehri to the Red Shop in Sophia, Carlton Stephenson is hoping that his race gains recognition.
Stephenson, who has been instrumental in keeping the sport of distance running alive in an interview with Kaieteur Sport previously spoke of how disappointed he is that support from corporate Guyana and the Ministry of Sport has been inadequate, adding that it seems as though marathon running in Guyana is not viewed as relevant.
The disappointed individual related his struggle to solicit sponsors for the event which has been ongoing for quite a few years now, pointing out that by now the corporate community and the Ministry of Sport should have added their weight to the race in an effort to attract foreign participation.
He said many young and upcoming athletes are eager to participate in the race and they usually look forward to its running every year.
The grey-bearded host informed the event caters for everyone interested in leading a healthy life and among those who’ve competed in the race include leading distance athlete Kelvin Johnson.
Stephenson said he is hoping that sponsors see the potential of the event and come on board so that it could evolve into an international race and be a feature on the sports tourism calendar.
