No need for generalisations

Dear Editor,
This relates to the letter written by Mr. F. Kissoon dated February 19, 2012 (This doctor’s conduct should indeed have been investigated) in this paper. I must start off by saying that I respect Mr. Kissoon and what he stands for. His insight and ongoing efforts to educate the Guyanese people are commendable and I enjoy reading his work. However I must take him on the content of said letter.
I have no knowledge of the issue of the doctor who did not write the prescription so I’ll refrain from commenting on that. However too long have doctors at the GPHC come under scrutiny for various matters, especially as these relate to their competence and conduct towards patients/relatives.
I have been studying at the institution, coming into contact with the doctors there for over two years and I describe the work they do there as nothing short of heroic. The doctors that decide to stay to practise are doing a great service to society and are working under circumstances that would send the average person to an asylum.
Multiple 36-hour shifts per week, sleepless nights, eating habits that they ridicule patients for having, seeing and SAVING hundreds of patients on the ward and thousands more in clinic on a weekly basis and still having to find time for their personal life and problems.
The above is a rough and grossly inadequate attempt to paint a picture of the workload. This is in no way an excuse for anyone or for any event that may have occurred.
It is common knowledge that people make mistakes from time to time and some persons may have ‘off days’ as it relates to attitude but this should not and must not overshadow all their hard work and thousands of living patients that would give testimony to the dedication of the doctors collectively at GPHC.
I’m just asking for Mr. Kissoon and other members of the public to refrain from making hurtful generalizations that discourage the few hardworking doctors we still have here.
