An inmate of the New Amsterdam prison was jailed for a further 12 months for chopping another prisoner in a brawl over a cell phone.
Chetram Narine, 32, of Williamsburg, Corentyne, Berbice was jailed by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court after he pleaded guilty to the charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm on inmate Omar Shafeek.
The prosecution’s case was that at about 07:10 hrs on Tuesday 27th December 2011, Chetram Narine and Omar Shafeek had a quarrel over a cell phone. During the misunderstanding Narine picked up an iron bar and beat Shafeek, who had to seek medical attention. Narine was subsequently charged.
