In an effort to make the lives of the differently-abled more comfortable, the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) has installed a wheelchair sign in front of the Guyana Post Office Corporation headquarters, at its North Road entrance.
The initiative was taken after there were repeated reports of persons in wheelchairs being unable to get into the premises because of vehicles blocking the entrance.
It was made possible through a collaboration with the National Commission on Disabilities (NCD) and the Post Office.
The G.P.O.C is now calling on the public, especially motorists, to heed the sign, thus protecting the basic right of persons with disabilities to access public buildings and services.
Mrs. Beverly Pile, the Administrative Officer at NCD said: “All persons with disabilities should have a barrier free access to all public facilities. Motorists who do not obey the wheelchair sign are violating the rights of persons with disabilities. These rights are protected by the Guyana Persons with Disabilities Act 2010.”
Through this project NCD is promoting the rights of all persons with disabilities in Guyana and fulfilling the mandate of the Persons With Disabilities (PWD) Act 2010.
The NCD is a semi-governmental organization that is constituted by the PWD Act 2010, with its main objectives being promoting and fulfilling the rights of persons with disabilities and to work with various agencies to institute policies and programmes that include persons with disabilities.
Other organizations are being urged to take part in this initiative and help make the lives of differently-abled persons more comfortable.
