A 35-year-old minibus driver was killed on the spot at around 01:30 hrs yesterday after crashing into a parked truck on the Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara Public Road.
Teddy Persaud, called ‘Bow Foot’ of Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara was the lone occupant of the Route 31 minibus.
Persaud is survived by two children. His wife died about four years ago.
According reports, Persaud was heading south along the West Bank Demerara Public road when he swerved to the opposite side of the road and crashed into the truck. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
It is unclear what caused the driver to veer out of his lane, though a relative speculated that he fell asleep at the wheel.
“All we hear is a screeching sound and then we hear blam, and when we look outside we see this minibus fold up into the truck,” one Stanleytown resident said.
The man said he then noticed a large crowd and heard persons saying that a man was trapped in the minibus. The injured Persaud was eventually pulled from the vehicle but was already dead when he arrived at the hospital.
“This man had to be speeding and fall asleep or something because he come outa he lane and slam into that truck. That truck wheel almost break off…it look like the chassis break…da alone should tell you the speed he de going with,” another man said.
The minibus was also badly damaged.
Persaud’s mother, Yubraji Narine, learned of the tragedy after receiving a telephone call from another son.
“Teddy brother call me and tell me that they had a accident and that me should go down to the hospital but when we reach Best Hospital he de already dead,” Narine said.
Narine said as far as she knew her son was on his way home when he met his death. The woman said her son worked as a minibus driver and worked tirelessly to support his two children, Romila, 13 and eight-year-old Renaldo.
Persaud’s wife died some four years ago and the woman and her son have been looking after the two children. The woman said she is at a loss as to what could have happened but speculated that her son may have fallen asleep while driving.
