Dear Editor,
Your Friday, February 10, 2012 back page story captioned (Guyana lose more International matches) about the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) removal and transfer of 2012 international cricket matches from Guyana caught my attention, troubled me and raised many questions.
Cricket is still my game of choice, followed closely by football, cycling and horseracing. I grew up with cricket at home, at school at club level. Cricket is still our national game played by more Guyanese than by any other playing other games. We have to be worried by this national disease threatening the health and life of the once “gentleman’s game” here.
The Government of Guyana vs Guyana Cricket Board row has highlighted the fact that the Ministry of Sport supervises the use of the National Stadium at Providence.
When the West Indies Board opts therefore to remove planned international games from the Stadium, the row now seems to be between WICB and our Government. What a worsening state of affairs for the Guyanese cricketing fans like me. I’ll bet the beleaguered West Indies Cricket Board did not have the courtesy to inform the local Ministry of Sport. I might be wrong, but like our Trade Winds, I view this current West Indies Cricket Board with less than respect.
Because since this major row I have consulted the ICC websites, West Indian friends and spoken to many involved on all sides, in Guyana. It is now clear that the WICB is acting on its own volition and in contradiction to its parent body. Fans can all easily check it out.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) even when it condemns does not mean that it sanctions or penalize right away. It warns errant Boards and gives time (Check Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe Boards and their past problem.
The ICC Lord Woolf Report, with some 60 recommendations, proposed giving Boards with problems up to June 2013 before any harsh sanction is imposed. Check the ICC Website.
The local GCB is supposed to be the Agent of the Regional WICB. It is now in possession of its offices and dubious recognition from the WICB. On what grounds, therefore, were international matches removed and are being transferred from Guyana? Is the WICB now more powerful than its parent body, the ICC?
I am merely a concerned Guyanese fan and do not wish to contribute to prolonging any impasse, but I am actually suspecting SPITE from these top St Lucians in the WICB against Guyana. Sirs, you are hurting fans like me, more than you are intimidating the Guyana Government. Regional public opinion is against you.
Finally, I expose my other research findings to those interested: Dr. Julian Hunte to the WICB is actually the Head of the ICC’s Governance and Ethnics Committee or Department, look it up but he and his WICB are comfortable with the situation(s) with Boards in Antigua, the Leewards and other unaudited, non-transparent affiliates? Why is he not moving against them and for requiring the GCB group to prove the legality of recent “selections”?
My poor country; Eminent past cricketers and administrators, other prominent legal minded citizens want to use a few months to regularize and bring integrity to local cricket administration.
But a few selfish businessman provide millions to attorneys to go to Court to prevent good order.
I say let greed be exposed if even we have to pause a while for justice for genuine young cricketers and their fans.
