The New Amsterdam Stelling Road (Matthew Allen Road) will today be a hive of activity as Berbicians from all walks of life trek to the venue for the Cavalcade of Sport organised by the New Amsterdam 2012 Mashramani/Republic Anniversary Committee in collaboration with the Mayor and Town Council of New Amsterdam. The committee which is headed by former New Amsterdam Mayor Errol Alphonso has planned a week of activities to coincide with Mashramani celebrations this year.
The week of activities kicked off on Friday with a clean-up campaign. The attention will now be focused on the cavalcade of sports. The activities include Five a side Football, Three on Three basketball, Two on two Volleyball, Four on four Netball, Road Tennis and three man Dominoes.
Cash and trophies will be up for grabs for the winning teams as well as outstanding individual players. Teams are expected to be drawn from most of the wards in News Amsterdam including Tucber Park, Smythfield, Vryman’s Erven, and Stanleytown among others as well as from East and West Canje, Corentyne and East Bank Berbice. Action time is 10:00hrs.
Among the sponsors are Ansa Mc AL Guyana Limited, Trophy Stall of Bourda Market and Alphonso and family. Music will be supplied by Shocking Vibes.
Meanwhile, citizens are urged to come out in their numbers and participate in the events which are expected to showcase the diversities of culture and uniqueness of way of life of the peoples of the township. The activities will continue on Monday with a talent show billed for Town Hall. The committee will join with the Regional Democratic Council of Region six for the annual Candle light parade and cultural programme at State House. This will be followed by a grand costume parade on Thursday 23rd February down the streets of New Amsterdam. The week of activities will culminate with a Fashion show and Pageant on Saturday 25th on the Lawns of the New Amsterdam Technical Institute.
