Members of A Partnership For National Unity (APNU) reached out to the depressed community of Bat Creek, which is located over fifteen miles from Charity, in the Pomeroon River.
Councillor, Wazeer Latiff, said he learnt of the sufferings of the people in that Community and ventured out in a small way to assist persons in Bat Creek. A package of clothing was distributed to the Miguel family.
There were children not attending school due to inadequate transportation accessibility.
Mayleen Miguel, 29, a mother of nine said that almost 100 people reside in Bat Creek where there are about 25 students not attending School.
She said the non-attendance by children has to do with the mode of transportaton. She said that at present, the engine that powers the boat has encountered problems and because no one knows when it would be fixed she cannot pronounce on how long those children would stay away from School.
The young mother stressed that she cannot afford to send her children to school because they are not working women and the distance that the children have to travel is very far.
Miguel said that another problem has to do with medical care, She said that when a pregnant mother is about to give birth, an elder in the community would take the responsibility to act as ‘midwife’. To access medical care, persons would have to travel to Karawab, she added.
Miguel said that because of the remoteness of the area, many persons are not aware of the situation the residents have to contend with.
She said the family usually uses the creek water for drinking, bathing and cooking. Their daily meals consist of cassava bread and fish.
Miguel said they would have rice only occasionally.
Another young mother, Shirley Miguel, has eight young children. She said that what is needed in Bat Creek is a more accessible programme to assist in educating especially women about Health care and Family planning.
She opined that mothers are having too many children and the task of properly taking care of the children becomes a burden.
Many of the adults in Bat Creek do not know their age and the ages of their children. While some of the births are registered, persons are not equipped with birth certificates.
