Several years after Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis became Guyana’s first world champion, the gym built to commemorate the feat, the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym, has been designated the home of amateur boxing when government official, Odinga Lumumba handed over the keys to the institution to executive members of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) yesterday afternoon.
The simple ceremony took place at the Gym’s Independence Boulevard location, just on the periphery of Albouystown, where Lewis perfected his art during his early adolescent years. Both Lumumba and President of GABA Steve Ninvalle were present at the auspicious occasion and the GABA President accredited the efforts of Lumumba in the realization of the initiative. The latter individual said that the idea to designate the gym to its new functions emerged after noting the hard work put in by Ninvalle towards the young pugilists’ development. He also noted that one could not speak of boxing development while ignoring the young pugilists.
On that note he congratulated Ninvalle for employing innovative thoughts towards the boxers’ advancement. Lumumba pointed out that the institution was built for the community after Lewis selflessly made the request to former head of state, Bharrat Jagdeo following his historic world title achievement. The government official also said that while the amateur boxers will be allowed to use the facility free of cost, professional practitioners would be asked to pay a fee to practice their art.
For now, the facility would be fitted with an office complex on the top floor as well as accommodation for those boxers residing outside of Georgetown but traveling to the city to compete in tournaments. A coach will soon be identified to monitor the activities of the boxers while veteran trainer, George Oprecht will perform caretaker duties. Odinga also hinted that government is currently toying with the idea of inviting an international coach shortly.
