DEAR EDITOR,
For years I have known people to be at the Stabroek Market gates facing Demico House asking almost everyone that passes if they have gold and/or silver to sell or anything else. I am aware that we all have to survive, but over the years the numbers have increased and likewise their business has been questionable. This has caused them to be occasionally raided by the law enforcement and some successful prosecutions, in some instances for pedaling and using drugs right there.
Many thefts are occurring around the market area and people agree that most of the stolen items (cellphones, watches, glasses/spectacles, jewellery etc.,) sometimes end up with some of these people for resale. One would assume they know most of the thieves and might be in collaboration with them and they could also be pointing out unsuspecting prey to them. This has caused lots of customers to shy away from the market, thus the legitimate business people in the market lose customers.
I have asked stall holders why haven’t they formed a committee and gone to the relevant authorities and tried to remove them or monitor their actions, and they all agree that a network is established between these people and some within the authorities, and a blind eye is turned to allow them to continue their activities.
Apart from that, some of these people come out on the road and along with those at the gates would pull and hold onto people’s hands when they are passing and ask them what they have to sell. Many would-be shoppers are scared of these people, because when someone objects and raises their voice, the others would support the person for doing that and that person will be verbally abused by them, which also makes people stop traversing the area.
It is time these people are removed from there or are monitored closely because from all indications, most of the business they are conducting is illegal.
