DEAR EDITOR,
I have read with much interest, Ms. Syeada Manbodh’s article on animals at the pounds.
Firstly, I wish to congratulate her on the work she is doing. Not many people have the heart for animals; and Ms. Manbodh must be applauded for the hard work she has been doing with these innocent creations that are suffering at the hands of humans and also the persons who assist her to get the work done.
I am writing to support her views; indeed there must be a more humane way to deal with impounded animals. I know for a fact that Ms. Manbodh has been doing lots of work at the Sparendaam pound; cleaning, feeding and providing water for the animals. Imagine what must be happening at the other pounds nationwide that do not have a Syeada Manbodh to care for it.
I learnt that almost 40 cows were impounded some days ago at the Cove and John Police Station. Why are these animals being kept there so long? Contact should be made urgently with the owners to get them out so that they do not stay and suffer for want of food and water. I am saying this because I know for a fact that there was a calf tied in the Mahaica Police Station compound. After making inquiries I was told that the calf had been there for some days. At a closer look, I observed there was no water for the poor calf. How did they expect it to survive? I called the Police Station and spoke with a female officer and explained why I was calling. She was very polite and said that she was going to ensure that the calf was given water immediately. I was grateful for that and only hoped that the poor calf was indeed given the water.
My point is, why it is that someone from outside has to make these observations. When animals are impounded they suffer so much, as though they are the ones that commit a crime. This should not be. Make contact with the owners and deal with the matter with urgency. These owners should be charged/fined for negligence.
Through the press, I am hoping that some action can be taken and that the authorities responsible can address the situation in order to give some comfort to the poor animals.
