Justice Roxanne George yesterday sentenced an Essequibo man to 18 years imprisonment after he was found guilty of having carnal knowledge of an eight-year-old boy. The defendant Clifford Benjamin had committed the act on August 25, 2008.
State prosecutor Teshanna James-Lake presented the case for the state while Benjamin was represented by attorney at law Dindyall.
The prosecution stated that the victim was eight years old at the time of the incident and that it happened on a farm in the Pomeroon, where the accused was employed by the victim’s family.
On the day in question the child was sent to the farm to pick oranges. Benjamin called the child and sodomized him. The incident was later reported and he was arrested.
Benjamin, according to the police, said that he was sorry for what he did. The examining physician, police constable Lall and the victim all gave evidence.
In handing down her sentence Justice George said that a strong message needs to be sent to persons who commit these acts. She said that they will not go unpunished.
