Hannibal Gaskin of Dorado Speed Swim Club (DSSC) exhibited mental and physical fortitude as he venturing into waters where all other swimmers failed to thread in the1500m freestyle when competition continued on day-2 of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) annual Mashramani Meet yesterday at the National Aquatic Centre (NAC).
Gaskin, competing in the boys 13-14 age-group also had a good first day when he set a new 800m freestyle record. He continued yesterday when he was the only swimmer to take on the challenge of swimming the 1500m which required him to cover 30 lengths in the 50m Olympic size pool, which he accomplished.
Gaskin is the first known Guyana swimmer to attempt this event in a Long-Course meet. He has now established the Boys 13-14 record with a time of 21:37.07.
The afternoon session, featured Jessica Stephenson, who attained the CARIFTA qualifying time in the girls 15-17 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:18.46 seconds.
Stephenson who is always confident when entering her events disclosed that the Meet is basically to weigh her development since she’s currently in peak training for the Southern Sectional Games in Orlando, Florida in March.
Accalia Khan glided through the state of the art facility smoothly in the girls 11-12 200m Individual Medley, clocking 3:21.66 seconds to earn the top spot.
Saiyana Baksh also bettered her seed time in the girls’ 13-14 100m, swimming to 2:02.02 seconds in 100m breaststroke; Gaskin took almost a second off his seed time of 1:26.85 in the same event also. Noelle Smith swam almost a second faster than her entered seed time of 1:29.72, recording 1:28.97 to win the event.
Speaking with Smith who is currently studying CAPE (Sociology, Law and Physiology) at University of the West Indies (UWI) in Trinidad, she stated that swimming at the NAC is a bit strange to her since she’s not fully oriented with the pool. Swimming in this pool is kind of strange for me, I am trying to get oriented.”
Britany van Lange, who came second in the girls 50m backstroke on Thursday, did not give her opponents any chance of coming close in the 200m IM. Despite van Lange’s late start, she quickly parted the waters to surpass her rivals to take the lead and first place in 2:47.47.
The meet continues today at 11:20am; warm-up at 10:30am. Tomorrow is the final day.
