The extensive and impressive Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) League will officially bounce off today on the Burnham Basketball Court with Pepsi Sonics taking on Eagles in the first game at 6pm and a Macabees versus Nets clash to follow.
With a reported 14 teams expected to participate after the sub-association dunked an alley-oop from three major sponsors for the League, there is no doubt that the 2012 affair promises to be a historic encounter, spanning some four months with 100-plus games.
The League will feature Ravens, Pacesetters, Knights, Macabees, Pepsi Sonics, Guyana Defence Force, Panthers, Eagles, Nets, Patriots, Plaisance Guardians and Bounty Colts. In addition, the GABA President, David Carto informed that two new teams from the West Bank of Demerara are expected to register, upping the number of GABA-affiliated teams to 14 for the League.
The Guyana Basketball Officials Council (GBOC) will run the tournament that is expected to attract the crème de le crème of local basketball players. Carto had indicated that there will be plans to move the games to other venues as the tournament progresses.
The competition will attract over $500,000 in prize monies with another sum set aside for getting the top teams equipment. Apart from the prize monies, a GABA initiative will see teams being equipped with balls, uniforms, coolers and other basketball paraphernalia based on how well they perform in the League.
The GABA League will provide the true picture of the level of the sport in Georgetown, which will further enlighten stakeholders. The Georgetown sub-association has not yet made sponsors public because there are still some areas of the deals to be ironed out.
However, the association has indicated that it will not let financial negotiations for the League affect the playing of the sport since players are eager to get into action. The League is expected to test the quality of basketball in Georgetown and fitness of players.
The teams will play each other in several rounds using a format similar to the NBA. The teams that emerge on top will be a true reflection of the best teams in the Capital City. The quest will be officially ignited tonight the competing teams ready for jump-ball.
