Armed bandits continued their rampage by robbing another gold jeweler, this time in Berbice. Last week
they struck twice in West Demerara.
About 13:00hrs yesterday, Vishwanauth Seeram, 39, of Grant 2767 Crabwood Creek, who operates a gold jewelry establishment in Rose Hall Town Market, was robbed by three unmasked men.
According to the goldsmith, about 13:00 hrs he had just finished selling and had already packed up his ware.
He said that he entered his van which was parked at Independence Avenue (Market Road). “I went in my vehicle and sit down along with my employee, Kumar Gopaul, and as soon as I started the vehicle I heard a gunshot and when I watched I saw three men running towards my vehicle”, he recalled. “Apparently they were watching me and sitting down waiting for me to come out; they ain’t had on masks or anything”, he stated.
He said that he and his employee, Kamal Gopaul, 25, also of Crabwood Creek ,had just entered his vehicle, a Toyota.
“One of them come with a shot gun and smashed the (car) door glass [right side] and the man fired a shot in my vehicle. The bullet burst the windscreen on the top. He asked me to hand him the “Fu&%ing bag”, he noted.
Seeram said that he had a bag with him containing $5M worth of jewellery. He also had bank books and a cell phone with him at the time, all of which they took. There were diamond and gold jewellery, cell phones, some other things and some cash.
“I handed them the bag and they ran away and kept firing all the time. They ran for the seaside and when me watch Kumar, he whole face was covered in blood,” he stated.
As people began to emerge the bandits started to shoot indiscriminately, forcing everyone to dart for cover as they made their getaway towards the seaside into the swampy area.
He then rushed Gopaul to the Port Mourant Hospital, after which he was later rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital. An X-ray was performed on Gopaul and he was subsequently discharged and sent home. One of his eyes was bandaged.
Seeram, who has been operating his business for over 19 years, stated that it was the first time that he has been robbed. He said that he suffered minor injuries and is thankful that no one was seriously injured.
The Rose Hall town outpost is a stone throw away. The police were contacted and gave chase but up to press time no one had been arrested.
