The Youth Coalition for Transformation is appealing to Human Services Minister, Jennifer Webster, to “come out as a woman, as a mother and as a concerned Guyanese” and denounce the conduct of embattled Police Commissioner Henry Greene.
The YCT, the youth arm of A Partnership for National Unity, in a press release yesterday, said that since Greene has admitted in his application to the High Court that he used his office to solicit sexual favours from a woman and mother in need of his assistance, he must be held accountable for what he has done.
“Where is the Minister of Human Services in all of this? Ms. Jennifer Webster has been tight lipped on this matter for weeks and months even as her office claims to be fighting for equality for women.”
According to the YCT, equality does not translate into using our bodies to advance in this world.
“This is an eerie reminder of former President Jagdeo’s abuse of his common law wife,
Varshnie Singh. Our former first lady begged the Human Services Ministry to come to her assistance, but instead, the then Human Services Minister Priya Manickchand turned her back on her, calling it a private matter,” the YCT pointed out.
According to the YCT, this is not the Commissioner’s first admission to using his office to solicit sexual favours.
It referred to the much read WikiLeaks Cables which mentioned that the Commissioner was surprised that the revocation of his US Visa was not due to his “troubling of the girls”.
“Why is the government protecting a commissioner who continues to prove time and time again that he will take advantage of women and that he does not respect the rule of law?…Let us tell men like him that there is no place for them in our society, that our women are not sex slaves, that they are to be protected and that our children must be able to trust us,” the YCT stated.
The APNU youth arm also took offence to statements attributed to Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon, who was quoted as saying that “Mr. Greene has an agreement with the President, an agreement that sees his service extended beyond 55 but not longer than 60.”
That agreement was made under the presidency of Bharrat Jagdeo.
The YCT said that given the recent admission by the Commissioner, why would President Donald Ramotar recognize such an agreement?
The Commissioner’s contract, it said, should have been based on the premise that the high office would remain pure and as unsullied as he received it.
The youth body believes that no agreement is above the law and if Police Commissioner Henry Greene has broken the law then he must be penalized.
“The people could not have contemplated that one in whom their trust has been reposed would have admitted to such unethical conduct…Bearing in mind that the Commissioner is married and the father of a young child. One could just imagine how ashamed his wife must be at this time and how much abuse she has suffered at his hands,” the YCT stated.
“Does President Ramotar not comprehend what Commissioner Greene admitted to in Court? Does he not feel the need to protect our women?”
“Could you imagine that after going before a Judge and saying that ‘Yes, I used my office to solicit sexual favours from those I promise to serve and protect, all that the PPP/C administration could come up with is and I quote ‘Commissioner Green has an agreement with the President that would see his service extended beyond age 55 and that it is a matter of concern’.”
The YCT believes that Dr. Luncheon is an emotionally lonely individual to have made such statement in defense of Commissioner Greene.
The YCT is of the view that Commissioner Greene should be dismissed forthwith since it has been proven that he is an embarrassment to the Police Force.
