A man who allegedly assaulted his wife and threatened to burn down their house with her inside was yesterday remanded to jail after his wife explained to the court that their domestic issues were as a result of her husband’s cheating and abusive ways.
Thirty- nine- year-old Zakeer Salim was slapped with two charges of using threatening language to his wife Aleema Porter and unlawfully assaulting her. The man pleaded not guilty to both charges.
The woman explained that before she caught her husband committing adultery, their relationship was fine. But she said that ever since she found him “messing around” with another woman in his vehicle, everything started to go downhill.
The couple has been in an 18-year relationship that bore two children, and they have been before the Probation and Welfare Department as they tried to rectify their regular domestic issues.
The police alleged that on February 14 at Land of Canaan, the couple ended up in an argument that resulted in Salim allegedly choking Porter and giving her several cuffs about her body.
The police said that the man subsequently uplifted a bottle of gasoline and threatened to dose the woman and burn down the house with her inside. The police were subsequently contacted, and Salim was arrested.
During yesterday’s court hearing, Salim stood silent and did not attempt to defend himself, only answering when he was required to plead to the charge.
The court ordered that the man be remanded to jail and be brought back to court on February 20.
