Gaskin, Grant & Simmons set records on day one
Hannibal Gaskin (Boys 13-14), Amy Grant (Girls 9-10) and Soroya Simmons (Girls 15-17) rewrote the record books as action in the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) annual Mashramani Meet got off to a flying start at the National Aquatic Centre (NAC) yesterday.
The Meet which was originally threatened due to some communication lapses with regard to granting of permission for the uses of the state of the art facility eventually got underway unhindered to the delight of the swimmers, officials and spectators.
Chopping almost forty seconds off his converted entry time of 10:59.19 to set a new, Gaskin created the most outstanding time clocking 10:19.59 in the long course 50m pool, setting the first 800m freestyle national record.
Gaskin who took the lead from the start of the official’s whistle in the 200m freestyle broke his own record of 2:19.82, taking one second off his previous time, clocking 2:18.32.
Dismantling the 1995 record, which was recorded by Asanti Mickle in the 50 seconds barrier, Amy Grant swam to a cool 46.88 in style in the girls 50m backstroke.
Noelle Smith’s 2010 50m backstroke record was rewritten by Soroya Simmons in 36.75 and also by the second placed competitor, Britany van Lange, 36.92 who had a close finish to the line.
Accalia Khan of Bishops’ High School also achieved a new personal best time of 2:45.67 erasing five seconds from her previous time of 2:49.67 in the girls 11-12 200m freestyle.
Athletes over the next few days will be vying for selection to GASA teams for the Goodwill and Carifta Championships.
