DEAR EDITOR,
I write to you because we live in a dangerous and treacherous country. I was asked to see the Muslim Scholar who was charged with a multiplicity of crimes involving young boys.
It would be improper of me to divulge the multiplicity of illnesses which afflict this Scholar, but I can say without any fear of contradiction that he could not have committed the acts leveled against him. To say that he committed those acts is akin to saying that an individual without arms could use a cutlass to attack policemen.
It is utterly repugnant and disgraceful that the Police officers who were tasked with investigating the complaints did not ascertain from the GPHC which he attends, his medical history.
We live in a country in which the police cannot conduct a proper investigation and the senior officers do not know or understand their duties and obligations.
The conduct of the Muslim community in this matter is repugnant and reprehensible. The community seemed to have condemned him without affording him an opportunity to be heard.
The Attorney General clearly does not know that the DPP cannot recuse herself from this matter nor can she assign or delegate her responsibilities.
Had my recommendations to the Chang Commission been adopted we would have had a civilian body overseeing the work of policemen. I remain committed to the view that we need a Police Commissioner who comes out of Scotland Yard and six Deputy Commissioners from the Yard. Additionally, we need at least one hundred sergeants from the Yard to do leg work.
The illness of the accused dates back to July 1999 and had our Police Force been properly constituted the atrocities taking place would never have occurred.
