The state of students as young as 12 years old not attending school in the Pomeroon area, has been brought to the attention of the Education Department in Region Two.
Officials at the Education Department have since visited the Pomeroon River, and have secured a more detailed view of the current situation.
Region Two Chairman, Parmanand Persaud, said he was alerted to the current problem of school dropouts in the Pomeroon River, and that he was awaiting a report from the Department of Education.
PPP councillor, Arlene Bouyan, said that at the recently held Regional Democratic Council meeting, the authorities noted that throughout the Pomeroon River for quite a while, school age children are not attending school.
Bouyan added that there are many reasons for this serious issue. She said that while the students of both sexes are venturing into the interior, the cost of transportation in the Pomeroon River is extremely high.
Bouyan said while some students would travel with a boat that strictly transports students, those who do not travel with that boat, would have to pay $1,200 per day, which many parents cannot afford.
She said to cut cost some students who have relatives on the Essequibo Coast, would seek accommodation there for the week or more.
Bouyan said while cost should not be an excuse, parents are to be blamed in many instances. She is recommending the introduction of the Truancy campaign to be brought to the Pomeroon, in order to address the issue.
