Dear Editor,
It is clear that the PPP/C has no intention of being a minority administration, and is now in campaign mode. How else could one accept the recent unsavory remarks made by Donald Ramotar in the Chronicle relating to the 2011 elections?
One has to be a political neophyte not to see the writing on the wall and realize that the PPP/C is gearing-up for elections. The rhetoric smacks of the type of racial fear-mongering that the PPP/C has perfected and use as red meat to rally what’s left of the party’s base.
Note must be taken that what Mr. Ramotar is doing is nothing short of stoking the fires of racial distrust, when he accuses the opposition of resorting to violence and other means to tamper with the electoral process.
We are almost three months removed from elections day and the man who won the presidency now claims that his party was robbed.
Unsatisfied with the electorate’s decision that forces all sides to work together for the good of the nation, Donald Ramotar and the PPP/C want nothing less than total control. They would like nothing better than to return to the days of parliament being an executive rubber stamp and a broken leg on the stool of democracy. This new dispensation that is welcomed by the majority of the people of Guyana is most unwelcome by the PPP/C, and they will do anything to reverse the will of the people.
Make no mistake, Ramotar’s remarks was the first shot over the bow, but in the coming weeks there will be more, and the voices will become more strident. Even though the claims of the opposition rigging the elections is utter nonsense, you will continue to hear it being said over and over again until it drowns out reality and becomes the PPP/C narrative of the 2011 elections.
Having total control of the state media, the PPP/C will in time saturate the airwaves with lies and innuendoes about the opposition that plays to the fears of its large Indo-Guyanese base. They will concoct strange stories of manipulation by APNU, they will not say APNU without mentioning PNC, and they will link the two as one entity, for they are aware that nothing riles their base up more than a potential fight with the PNC.
What happens next and how we deal with what Mr. Ramotar and his party are seeking to do will say more about us, than them. The Guyanese people spoke loud and clear on November 28th, 2011, they said they were tired of the status quo; the PPPC lost the popular vote, and the people opted for a division of powers; giving the opposition the legislature and the PPP/C the executive. The opposition leaders must be ready for the next steps, and begin immediately to educate the people and prepare them for what is to come. They must answer swiftly and cogently dismiss the slander and misinformation that will be peddled by the administration and the party.
I was hoping that all parties would rise to the challenge and use this period to heal old wounds and show our people what could be possible when we work together, but it is clear that the PPP/C has no such intentions. Reading Donald Ramotar’s convoluted fabrications, we get a glimpse into the inner workings of his mind, and what we see is a man who is not prepared for the office he now occupies.
Lest we forget, here are a few truths about the 2011 elections; There was blatant misuse by the PPP/C of state media and other resources for campaigning; The PPP/C government announced a 8% across the board pay hike on November 7th; November 17th the promise of a year-end bonus for security services; mass changes of polling stations that differed from the official list especially in Region 4,5,7,9 and 10; Voters unable to find their names on the voting lists and at least two instances at the official tabulation centre where envelopes with SOPs were delivered by unaccredited and unescorted individuals. There was one reported incident of violence in Region four involving a known PPP/C operative (that matter is before the courts) and another incident involving Mr. Kwame McCoy, which was also given widespread media coverage.
Finally, I am convinced that left unchallenged there are forces in the PPP/C that will lead us further into moral darkness and social decay; Victor Hugo’s words are very prescient “Where there is darkness crimes will be committed. The guilty one is not merely he who commits the crime but he who caused the darkness.”
