The newly formed Interim Management Committee (IMC) comprising of Chairman, Clive Lloyd, Roger Harper, Mark Harper and Bissoondyal Singh, visited the Essequibo Coast and met with Essequibians to participate in an interactive discussion, while asserting recommendations, how to improve cricket, starting from the ground level.
Lloyd in his speech said the IMC is a body that was formed by the Government. Lloyd who added he was speaking as a non-member of the West Indies Cricket Board, explained the importance and the aspect of cricket starting at the club level.
Lloyd said priority must be placed on cricket at the club level in order for successful growth to emerge in the game. “Speak to clubs and try to find out what are their needs.”
Lloyd encouraged cricket enthusiasts to implement a cricket development plan with the involvement of everyone in order to have effective results.
Lloyd said the IMC is for a short time, while admonishing clubs reps to elect people who have an interest in the game and not those who are in it for personal gain.
Hakeem Khan, a popular Essequibo businessman, said Essequibo needs firm structure for cricket as well as proper facilities. Khan stressed that the NDC’s need to place more emphasis on the maintenance of the grounds in Essequibo, which he reported are poorly maintained.
Councilor Basil Persaud vented that the level of cricket in Essequibo is very bad and at the Nursery level the game is dying. Persaud said, while there are a lot of existing phantom clubs more youths are moving away from the sport and are looking at other sports due to lack of sponsorship, poor grounds and cricket gears.
In Essequibo there are eight clubs in the South, eight in the North, four of which are juniors.
The IMC mission statement underscores to facilitate development, good Governance and proper Administration of cricket and thereby raising the standard in Guyana. The forum was orchestrated under the theme “Enriching lives through sport.” (Yannason Duncan)
