-Lumumba says delay can cause international ban for Guyana
Guyana’s top football club, Alpha United, has announced their withdrawal from
the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) yesterday afternoon.
Following the revelation to Kaieteur Sport, President of the Club, Odinga Lumumba, indicated that the GFA’s General Council had mandated the Executive to seek a resolution to the disagreement between the GFA and the Guyana Football Federation (GFF); where the respective parties Lawyer’s should meet to settle the matter.
Lumumba added that the GFA’s Lawyer made several attempts to get the matter settled but the Executive of the GFA did not carry out the mandate of the General Council. He is of the view that delaying the settlement of the matter can result in Guyana being banned from international football by the world body, FIFA.
Vice President of the Club, Steve Ninvalle stated that the reason for the Club pulling out of the GFA was due to the indistinguishable impasse between the GFF and GFA, “We had an emergency meeting discussing the different angles of the situation and decided to exclude ourselves from any activity organised by the GFA until the impasse between the two entities is settled.”
Ninvalle further stated that the Executive of Alpha United did not find favour with the unwillingness or slowness of the GFA Executive handling of the mandate given by the General Council.
Alpha is ambivalent of how the matter is being dealt with by the GFF and GFA resulting in Ninvalle stating that, “As it is right now we are withdrawing,” he said.
Ninvalle concluded by declaring that Alpha United had remained loyal to the GFA and football, “Last December Alpha United stood with the GFA in the Banks Knock Out Tournament.”
President Lumumba is hoping that the decision made by Alpha will encourage other clubs to let the GFA and GFF come to a resolution of the matter urgently.
Here is the text of the letter sent by Alpha to the GFA:
Dear Mr. Matthias,
RE: ALPHA UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB DECISION
The Executive of Alpha United Football Club has decided to withdraw the club from participating in any activity organized by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) until a settlement is made between the GFA and the Guyana Football Federation (GFF).
The executive was forced to make this decision following the unwillingness and evident sloth of your executive to carry out the mandate of its General Council which directed that GFA’s Lawyer Roysdale Forde meet with the GFF’s Lawyer.
Alpha United finds this modus operandi disrespectful, unreasonable and not in the best interest of football, in particular with Guyana’s role in the qualification for 2014 World Cup. Therefore, as of February 15, 20112 our withdrawal becomes effective.
Please note that Alpha United has remained committed to the upliftment of football in Georgetown as was demonstrated in December 2011 when we displayed loyalty by playing in the Banks Beer Knockout competition.
Yours sincerely,
Odinga Lumumba President
