A former Guyana Defence Force rank, 29 year-old Jermaine Jeffrey Johnson, will spend the next six years in prison after pleading guilty to an attempted robbery charge.
Johnson appeared at the Providence Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Leslie Sobers.
The charge stated that on Saturday, February 11, last, at Timehri, being armed with a dangerous weapon – a .357 magnum pistol – he attempted to rob shop owner Debra Edwards. Johnson pleaded guilty.
Police Prosecutor Shellon Daniels told the court that on the day in question the virtual complainant (Edwards) was closing up her shop when Johnson approached her from behind holding her at gunpoint. The court was told, that the virtual complainant grabbed the gun and engaged her attacker in a scuffle. This resulted in Johnson firing off a shot which went into the ceiling. Johnson then decided to run away but Edwards gave chase, pelting her attacker with beer bottles.
However Johnson made good his escape. The matter was immediately reported to the police and based on information provided the police apprehended him at Friendship on the East Bank of Demerara. At the time Johnson was carrying a blue haversack and the police carried out a search on Johnson and the gun was found in the haversack. The man was told of the offence, arrested and charged.
When asked if he had anything to say, the accused told the court, “I aint know why I do it”.
