Terrence John of Water Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara, is currently before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly discharging a firearm at police who were about to conduct a search in his area.
The charge states that on January 12 the man shot at a police ranks as they approached.
The ranks said that John was standing on the street and as he saw them, he whipped out a Walther pistol and opened fire. The ranks took cover and returned fire. The man was struck once in the leg and fell to the ground. He was taken to Georgetown Public Hospital where he received treatment and was later released into police custody.
John appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry on January 27 where he pleaded guilty to the illegal possession of a firearm and the possession of ammunition, while he was not the holder of a licence for either of the articles. But John claimed his innocence for the charge of discharging a firearm at a police rank.
He was sentenced to two years imprisonment for the firearm and 14 months for the ammunition. John is still before the court for discharging the weapon at the rank.
